Valuers and the global financial crisis of 2008: implications for the (South) African valuation profession

Manya Mooya

AfRES from African Real Estate Society (AfRES)

Abstract: This paper examines the sequence of events leading up to, and immediately after the global financial crisis of 2008. Specifically the paper reviews the role played by valuers in precipitating the crisis, the challenge that the crisis posed to the valuation profession and the post-crisis response by various regulatory and professional bodies. The paper distils lessons from the crisis and makes specific recommendations for policy and regulation governing the valuation profession in (South) Africa.
