No 365855, 2023 Seventh AAAE/60th AEASA Conference, September 18-21, 2023, Durban, South Africa from African Association of Agricultural Economists (AAAE)

Abstract: This research aims to explore the effects of migrants' remittances on agricultural production in WAEMU countries. Particular attention is given to the interactive effect of these remittances and farm-related characteristics such as the area of farmland farmed, agricultural labor force and climate. The study sample is composed of six WAEMU countries covering the period 1993-2020. The generalized least squares estimator is used as the main estimation technique, and the panel corrected standard error (PCSE) is used to verify the robustness of the results. One of the major findings indicates that the effect of migrant remittances on agricultural production in WAEMU countries depends on the area of agricultural land exploited. The results suggest the interest of WAEMU countries in adapting their rural financial markets to the needs of large farms.
