RATES OF RETURN TO PUBLIC AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH IN THE PRESENCE OF RESEARCH SPILLOVERS

Jet Yee and Wallace Huffman

No 20628, 2001 Annual meeting, August 5-8, Chicago, IL from American Agricultural Economics Association (New Name 2008: Agricultural and Applied Economics Association)

Abstract: This study uses new state data to examine the contributions of public agricultural research, extension, and infrastructure to agricultural productivity. The estimated social rates of return (which take into account spillover effects) are high and imply a need for federal or regional institutions to coordinate public agricultural research funding.
