PURE ALTRUISM AND THE VALUATION OF RISK: AN EXPERIMENTAL TEST OF THE JOHANNESSON ET AL. CONJECTURE

William D. Schulze, Gregory Poe and Kent Messer ()

No 20294, 2004 Annual meeting, August 1-4, Denver, CO from American Agricultural Economics Association (New Name 2008: Agricultural and Applied Economics Association)

Abstract: Johannesson et al.(1996) conjecture that in a coercive, uniform tax setting like dichotomous choice contingent valuation, willingness to pay for public programs would be affected by altruistic consideration of the costs imposed on others. Using a voting-BDM elicitation mechanism, we demonstrate such valuation petterns in an experimental economics setting.
