AN EMPIRICAL ANALYSIS OF RURAL DEPOSIT MOBILIZATION IN SOUTH ASIA

Aruna Srinivasan and Richard L. Meyer

No 278092, 1986 Annual Meeting, July 27-30, Reno, Nevada from American Agricultural Economics Association (New Name 2008: Agricultural and Applied Economics Association)

Abstract: Paper presents GLS estimates for a model to explain rural deposits in India, Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka. Per capita rural income, bank density and real rate of interest for deposits were significant variables. Access to bank branches is important because of the transaction costs of making and withdrawing deposits.
