Abstract: Critics suggest the Census definition of a farm is subjective and too inclusive. This paper reviews the evolution of the current definition, proposes alternative objective minimum economic performance criteria, and examines the impact of these alternatives on common indicators used to monitor the farm sector's economic performance.
