ESTIMATION OF SHADOW PRICES OF UNDESIRABLE OUTPUTS: AN APPLICATION TO UK DAIRY FARMS

David Hadley

No 20977, 1998 Annual meeting, August 2-5, Salt Lake City, UT from American Agricultural Economics Association (New Name 2008: Agricultural and Applied Economics Association)

Abstract: The parameters of an output distance function are estimated utilising unbalanced panel data from 300 UK dairy farms. Potential nitrate contamination of groundwater is modelled within the production process as an undesirable output and shadow prices (which can be interpreted as marginal abatement costs) for such contamination are calculated.
