RESOURCE USE EFFICIENCY OF DUTCH DAIRY FARMS; A PARAMETRIC DISTANCE FUNCTION APPROACH

Stijn Reinhard and Geert Thijssen

No 21022, 1998 Annual meeting, August 2-5, Salt Lake City, UT from American Agricultural Economics Association (New Name 2008: Agricultural and Applied Economics Association)

Abstract: An output distance function is estimated using a panel of Dutch dairy farms. Nitrogen surplus is treated as a bad output. In contrast to assumptions made in the literature the good and the bad output turn out to be negatively related. Using this result, we define and calculate sustainable efficiency.
