Abstract: In recent years, the manufacturing sites of internationally traded fishery products have shown a strong tendency to cluster in particular regions of the world. The typical example is the canned tuna cluster in Thailand, which is ranked first worldwide in terms of canned tuna production with approximately 25% of the global production share. However, the spatial characteristics and temporal changes of industrial clusters globally remain relatively unknown. In this study, we estimated the indexes of industrial agglomeration in countries around the world from 1980 to 2006 and plotted them on global maps, focusing on internationally traded fishery products. Then, we showed the scale of skew of the indexes using a spatial economic indicator. We used data obtained from FAO’s “Fishstat plus (Commodities production and trade 1976-2007)” and the World Bank’s “World Development Indicators 2009.” The analysis enabled us to understand the trend of fishery products: demand is projected to expand rapidly due to an increase in population worldwide and changes in diet patterns. Moreover, the results provide countries and companies with fundamental information to find desirable FDI (foreign direct investment) targets, because industrial clusters have positive “external economy” effects derived from labor market pooling and the spillover of technology and knowledge.
