Corn in the Development of the Civilization of the Americas: A Selected and Annotated Bibliography

Louise O. Bercaw, Annie M. Hannay and Nellie G. Larson

No 319654, Agricultural Economics Bibliography from United States Department of Agriculture, Economic Research Service

Abstract: Excerpts from the Foreword: This bibliography contains references to books, pamphlets and periodical articles which show the part corn has played in the development of the civilization of the Americas. The scope of the bibliography is so broad that it has been impossible to examine all publications which might contain material on the subject. However, in addition to publications dealing specifically with corn many others dealing with the more general subjects of history, travel, botany, geography and Indians were examined. Many valuable references were found, through footnote citations in the publications examined. The collections of the Pan American Union Library and the Hispanic Room of the Library of Congress were other important sources of material. With a few exceptions references to the corn myths and ceremonials of the Indians have been omitted. References on the origin of corn have been included, but no attempt has been made to cover this subject. Since many of the references listed deal with more than one country an alphabetical arrangement by author and title has been followed. Names of countries and states may be found through the author and subject index, which accompanies the bibliography.
