Promoting formal urban agricultural based organisations in the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area of Ghana: what factors influence choice?

Abstract: This study uses data from a survey of 326 members of agricultural-based organisations in the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area of Ghana to model choice of formal organisation. People engaged in farming, and who perceive that they would reduce production and marketing risk, increase commodity sales and profits, reduce costs, improve rate of performance and can have a high level of trust for the members and leadership of the organisation were more likely to join formal organisations. These are the tangible benefits that members of formal organisations will require to commit. The study reiterates the necessity of appropriate role sharing and cooperation between the various government, non-governmental organisations and patrons for the success of formal agricultural-based organisations in urban centres.
