Biotechnology and the Structure of Agriculture in Developed Countries: A Comment

Cornelis L. J. van der Meer

No 315465, 1991 Conference, August 22-29, 1991, Tokyo, Japan from International Association of Agricultural Economists

Abstract: Applications of biotechnology are expected to have little effect on the economies of scale in agriculture. Diffusion will be slow. Although applications of biotechnology will gradually increase, in particular in science and technology programmes, in input-producing and processing industries, they are still unlikely to cause a break in prevailing trends of structural and economic development of the agricultural sector in the next 10 - 20 years.
