Abstract:
Based on the hypothesis that technological change in agriculture has a differential impact on the patterns of time allocation by the male and female, this study examines such patterns on the basis of individual data collected from six rice-producing villages in India. The results show that, although invisible and mostly unregistered, female participation is substantial. Also, specific technological innovations have widely divergent effects on the use of human labour, depending on whether it is male or female.
