Decline of the Intensive Sector of Nothern Ireland Agriculture: A Regional Case Study of the Effects of EC Policies

Abstract: This paper outlines the decline of egg and pigmeat production in Northern Ireland during 1972-82 and examines the factors that appear to have caused that decline. The extend to which it was due to European Community (EC) membership or other independent influences is assessed. The consequences of the decline for the region's agricultural economy are stated, and some conclusions are drawn about the resource transfer effects of EC agricultural polices.
