Abstract:
Increasing interest in conservation and ecosystem services requires modifying leases to account for the long-term nature of these activities. Current leasing education focuses on profit maximization. Research indicates that many non-operating landowners also have conservation and environmental goals for owning land. This project is furthering our understanding of multiple landowner objectives and providing additional educational material to help landowners and tenants incorporate conservation practices into their leases. Communication between landowners and tenants on how to integrate conservation into leases is a key barrier. A four-step process of recognizing each party’s objectives, exploring opportunities, communicating options and documenting decisions has been used in Missouri.
