Colorado Agriculture - A State in Transition

Abstract: Colorado’s farmers and ranchers are advancing in age. They feel an urgency to transition the assets – land, livestock, and equipment – and management to the next generations. Yet, they struggle with doing so. They are not sure how to begin the process. They struggle to separate their personal lives from their business, select a successor, and be “fair” to their heirs. Colorado State University in June 2022 conducted a survey designed to obtain information pertaining to the (1) existence of current estate and succession plans, and financial information by members of the retiring generation, (2) understanding of family farms and ranches by heirs and possible successors, and (3) key issues faced by farm and ranch families as viewed by Extension and other professionals. The survey was repeated in February-March 2024. The target audience included farm and ranch families, heirs, successors, and observers. Survey results will provide critical information for determining future efforts by Colorado State University towards sustaining production agriculture into the future and supporting farm and ranch families. The results will also serve as support for future grant funded projects.
