Abstract:
U.S. farmers are currently facing severe financial stress resulting in asset liquidations, problems in obtaining credit, and even bankruptcy. Farm lenders and many agribusiness firms are encountering similar financial stress problems. The focus of this discussion is on the origins and dimensions of the financial distress problem in agriculture. First the magnitude of the financial stress problem in agriculture is documented. Then the causes of stress are identified and discussed. Finally, a brief review of some of the resolution options is given.
