Abstract: The importance of farming to the Dutch economy is highlighted and the need to produce more from less land is emphasised. The preservation and development of competitive agricultural enterprises, based on private family capital, is of vital importance to the rural areas in Holland. Further research is needed to develop agricultural production methods which do not conflict with the objectives of maintaining a desirable environment. There is also an urgent need to find new uses for agricultural products. On the production side, the immediate priority is to control and limit production costs, bearing in mind that an important part of the productivity gain would go to strategic investments.
