An Economic Analysis of Erosion Control in the Ipero Stream Watershed: A Brazilian Case

No 346199, 9th Congress, Budapest, Hungary, 1993 from International Farm Management Association

Abstract: The objective of this paper is to analyse the economics of an erosion control project in the Ipero Stream Watershed, in Brazil. Soil loss for each hectare is estimated by the Universal Loss Equation, taking into account its natural erosion potential and cultivated crop. These values are then compared with the limits of soil loss tolerance and the results used for conservation policies' recommendations. Net Present Values (NPVs) for the difference between "with project" and "without project" situations are estimated for a period of 15 years. For the whole watershed, the NPVs are positive, partially due to low cost management practices which would be sufficient to control soil erosion for approximately 68% of the studied area.
