Sustainable Land Use and Incentive Compatibility

Abstract:
The first purpose of this paper is to present a theoretical framework from a sustainable point of view for the economic analysis of cropping behavior. The second is to evaluate economic conditions for the cropping behavior of a radish producing area in Hokkaido, the northern island of Japan, which is among the most rapidly vegetable-growing areas in Japan. To approach these themes, two concepts are incorporated, externality and incentive compatibility, terms often used in public economics, though still hardly used in this field. The author believes these concepts to be effective devices that can be applied in dealing with sustainable issues. Then the role of a producers' agreement for cropping behavior is examined to satisfy the second purpose.
