World Trade in Fruit and Vegetables

Abstract: During the last decade the international trade of fruit and vegetables has been characterized by comparatively fast increase in value and lower level of protection as compared to other agricultural products. The share of fruit and vegetables in whole trade of agricultural products has increased as a result of such tendencies. The highest increase in surplus was recorded in Spain, Netherlands and Turkey. Also, the rise in export from the Southern hemisphere countries was very intense. Decisive factors of that expansion were better transportability and storage facilities, impact of multinational distribution companies and exceptional increase in export of Chile. The Mediterranean countries as a whole (although they are still on the lead in world production and export) are loosing their market share and that is especially visible in countries non-members of EC.
