Electronic Plot Records for Ecologically Oriented Management of Crop Farms

Abstract: Plot records are becoming increasingly important in managing farms in an ecologically oriented way. This paper has provided an overview about the origin, structuring and development of plot record systems. It has described the state of technology and outlined further developments. Selected possibilities of data interpretation with regard to an ecologically oriented management issues were discussed in connection with standard economic and statistical evaluations on the farm, horizontal comparisons within one season (i.e. estimation and interpretation of production functions), and vertical comparisons through time (i.e. nutrient balances). Electronic plot records play an important role as a central documentation and processing medium used in conjunction with a variety of devices for data recording and analysis, and process control. Considerable development potentials exist for electronic plot record systems with respect ot ecological issues the integration of knowledge based approaches, and in linkages with geographic information systems (GIS).
