Management Changes Since the First IFMA Congress

Abstract: There have been sweeping changes in the practice and science of farm management since the First International Farm Management Congress was held in the United Kingdom in 1971. However the four tenets offarm business management still apply: 1. Recording the financial and physical information; 2. Analysis of the data; 3. Platming (or replanning) the farm business; 4. Controlling the business - that is, budgetary control Farm businesses are increasing in output, either by acreage or yield, or both. The standard of education is improving rapidly, as is the computer literacy of today's farmers. Ihe political, social, environmental pressures on farm businesses are causing farm managers to have to consider far wider aspects of their operations than used to be the case. The long-term outlook for farm businesses is good - in Europe once the CAP is terminated, and in other heavily subsidised agricultural industries once they too follow New Zealand’s lead to full, fair and non-subsidised trade.
