Feeding the World - The Contribution of Farm Management and The Farming Systems Approach to Development (FSD)

Abstract: In this paper, the global world situation with regard to availability of food is presented, followed by prospects of world population and agricultural growth. Focus is then turned to developing countries, specifically in sub-Saharan Africa, and considerations with regard to their dependence on food imports and food aid. The need to encourage their domestic agricultural production is expressed which, to a large extent, is generated by the small-scale sector. The challenge to meet objectives of increased and sustained production in these countries is substantiated, leading to the role of the Farming Systems Approach to Development (FSD) in this, including improved farm management which is well integrated in the approach. The concept and methods of FSD for increased food production, but more generally also for sustainable development of farm-household systems is substantiated and concluded with an outline for future directions.
