Transition Management of Family-Operated Farms

Abstract: This paper examines the effects of transitions on family- operated farms and principal management challenges resulting from transitions in family-operated farms. In response to the informal education needs of Nebraska's family-operated farms, Nebraska Cooperative Extension's farm management faculty developed informal education offerings for family- operated farms in transition situations. The goal-directed management model — a derivative of management by objective —provided the framework for these educational offerings. Instruction, practice, and instructor assistance is provided through workshops where family members engage in goal identification, financial analysis, priority setting, and management plan development. Highlights from experience with these offerings, insights from workshop participant evaluations, and anecdotal reports of farm-level outcomes are briefly reported. Based on more than a dozen years of experience with various forms of these educational offerings, the author concludes that goal identification is an essential aspect of effective transition management by family-operated farms.
