Managing My Farm into the 21st Century

Tony Worth

No 346351, 11th Congress, University of Calgary, Canada, July 14-19, 1997 from International Farm Management Association

Abstract: The 2,000 acre family farm is situated on the east coast of England in a rainfall zone which has a 10-year average of 19.5 inches. The alluvial silt soils support a 6-year arable and vegetable rotation. The main cash contributor is the potato crop, marketed through the vertically integrated packing operation which supplies direct to the retail multiples. Most other crops are marketed co-operatively. The challenge for the future in the UK and Europe into the twenty first century is in improved marketing and getting closer to the customer, addressing the food safety and environmental concerns of the consumer, and at the same time embracing any new technologies and techniques which drive down costs.
