A Strategic Analysis of Agricultural Cooperatives in South Africa

Abstract: Agricultural Cooperatives constitute an important feature of the South African agriculture, especially in financing the sector. Because of the country's history of apartheid, the majority of the effective cooperatives were patronized by white commercial farmers to the exclusion of small-scale, black farmers. The objective of this paper is to strategically analyze agricultural cooperatives in South Africa, using the SWOT approach. The paper examines the need to face the challenge of change and suggests effective measures for refocusing agricultural cooperatives in South Africa. The implication of the status quo on the future of agricultural cooperatives and farming as a whole is analyzed. Suggestions are offered for restructuring and strengthening agricultural cooperatives in South Africa.
