Teaching Management by Using a Computer Model of a Pig Fattening Operation

Abstract: A major goal for the education of Agricultural Technologists at SLU, Sweden is to encourage the student to work in independently positions with agricultural management of agricultural operations or closely related activies. The concept and goal of the project is to simulate different decision and management situations in a fattening pig operation. The model is based on a Australian pig model and altered to fit Swedish conditions. The model is used in Animal Husbandry courses as a tool to integrate the different subjects of the course. The model is developed in Powersim®. The technical and pedagogical evaluation show that the model can describe some factors behind the result of a fattening pig operation. Working with CAL means, we think, that you never stop developing the CAL, but also that you integrate CAL more and more in the curriculum which means that it is only one educational tool amongst others.
