Training Young Rural Managers: The "PROJOVEM" Case

Fernando C. Peres

No 346453, 11th Congress, University of Calgary, Canada, July 14-19, 1997 from International Farm Management Association

Abstract: Today, the Brazilian rural school system is basically oriented toward preparing students to leave the agricultural sector. This paper reports on a new program whose goal is to provide training for young rural managers that are willing to stay in the sector and become farmers. The PROJOVEM case was specially designed for elementary school drop-outs and is being executed by a collaboration between The Sao Paulo Center for Vocational Training (CEETEPS) and The University of Sao Paulo. The program has its learning method based on a modified version of the “Alternate Pedagogy” initially developed by small French farmers during the 1930's. Rather than the traditional disciplinary approach to learning, the PROJOVEM program bases its learning method on developing and executing individual agricultural activity projects. Following on from project development the program moves on to portfolio management, which uses a comprehensive process and requires a modest amount of resources to be implemented.
