Abstract:
This paper reports on the development of a Multimedia information-base and decision instrument to assist farmers in their attempts to diversify their current product base produced on thefarm. It is sometimes possible to add value to produce available on the farm. This reduces reliance on selling the raw product. In attempting to fulfill this need much time and effort is spent trying to decide what is viable, usable and sellable. In an attempt to diffuse the conftision which may arise from too much information, unreliable information, aMultimediaprogramme is under development which can give the farmer/prospective producer some knowledge into the various alternative products and processes available, the cost implications (equipment and electricity), legal requirements, storage and shelf life of the product. A prototype of the proposed multimedia programme will be shown, with an indication of some of the functions mentioned above
