Enhancement of Creativity in Farm Management

Abstract:
Like surfers, managers and their organisations have to ride on a sea of change-that can twist and turn with all the power of the ocean. Managers of the future will have to ride this turbulence with increased skill and many important competencies will be required In this paper the skill of creativity, as a human resource, will be addressed in the context of farm management. The focus is on creative problem solving. At first the concept of problem solving is discussed in an effort to move away from a myopic view of “problems”. Three broad kinds of problems are pointed out and the role of creativity within each discussed. Working in discovered or constructed problem environments seems to be related to the creativity aspect of problem solving. Six stages of the creative problem solving process are listed and the two kinds of thought processes, namely divergent and convergent activities within each stage, are accentuated Various factors that are thought to stifle creativity are identified and consideration is given to factors that can develop a climate in which both creativity and innovation can flourish. Creativity occurs in a social setting and is the interaction between a creative organisation and the creative people within it that produces innovation.
