Economic Evaluation of Animal Health Treatment on Farm Level - Case Studies for Pig Production

Abstract: Health problems in animal production have a significant impact on natural and economic performance This study aims to evaluate the economic impact of animal health treatment at the farm level The most important causative factors for infection in pig production are described The risk of infection on individual farms is determined by the individual production system, the hygiene status of the farm and the contacts to the environment. Depending on the health status, a change in natural performance level is estimated Given a negative infection status, performance is expected to decrease if disease occurs, while treatment would increase yields in the case of a positive infection status Many different measures may be employed to prevent or to cure a disease management measures and changes in the production system, for example AII-ln-AII-Out, environmental and hygiene conditions and vaccination for special diseases such as porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) Potential losses due to infection arc compared with the costs of treatment and a treatment strategy is recommended This decision making aid is available as computer software and can be used by both veterinarians and farmers
