CASSAVA SUPPLY RESPONSE IN MINAS GERAIS STATE, BRAZIL: AN EMPIRICAL EVALUATION

Abstract: When the Portuguese and Spanish navigators landed on the American continent in the 15th century, they found cassava being grown by Indians and used to prepare food and alcoholic drinks. For this reason, cassava can be considered a native American plant which has spread to other regions of the tropics. Cassava refers to any of several plants which are grown widely in many areas of the tropics for their fresh, starchy, edible root stocks. It is known as cassava in English speaking regions, as manioc in French speaking areas, as tapioca in English speaking parts of Southeast Asia, as mandioca in Brazil, and as yuca in Spanish speaking regions of South America. As one of the largest countries in the world, and with the necessity for much greater emphasis on increased production to feed a growing population and a growing industry, the need to implement policies which will induce substantial expansion of cassava production is becoming continually more urgent in Brazil.
