No 55815, Food Security Collaborative Working Papers from Michigan State University, Department of Agricultural, Food, and Resource Economics

Abstract: The committee members met on March 9, 2005 about the current food crisis in Mali. This food crisis resulted from the insufficiency in rainfall, and locust invasion and other pests. Consequently, 101 communes were identified as facing food difficulties affecting 1,148,256 people and 87 communes are considered as vulnerable to food shortages. To attenuate the food security crisis consequences, some key recommendations were formulated such as: Provide food aid to 101 communes; Put in place cereal banks in the 87 vulnerable communes; Subsidize animal feeds; Reconstitute the national food security stock; Support fisheries. FAO, World Bank, PAM, France and USAID are committed to support Mali to overcome this food crisis.
