AGRICULTURAL INDUSTRIALIZATION: FOR BETTER OR WORSE?

Luther G. Tweeten

No 28337, Economics and Sociology Occasional Papers - ESO Series from Ohio State University, Department of Agricultural, Environmental and Development Economics

Abstract: Industrialization of animal agriculture has created a battle groundpitting farmers against farmer, rural residents against large producers, and producer against consumer. The dilemma (tradeoff) of whether to have more small family farms or to lower food costs (with large farms) cannot easily be resolved. The answer is to internalize externalities (in waste disposal, odor, etc.), then to allow markets to work.
