Abstract: Este artigo faz uma caracterização dos assentamentos de reforma agrária mato-grossenses. A primeira parte do trabalho consiste em apresentar as raízes históricas do problema da concentração de terras, ou seja, um breve resumo da história dos projetos de colonização, da posse da terra através das leis que favoreceram os grandes latifúndios que caracterizam a agropecuária estadual até os dias atuais. A segunda e mais importante parte do trabalho apresenta a situação dos assentamentos rurais, com base no Censo da Reforma Agrária, realizado no ano de 2002, fazendo algumas comparações com outros estudos realizados em nível nacional e estadual. O trabalho é uma contribuição para a literatura regional ao oferecer descrições dos assentamentos rurais e evidenciando a agricultura de pequena escala do estado.-----------------This paper described the characteristics of Mato Grosso’s settlements part of the land reform program. The first part describes the historical roots of the land concentration problem, with a short history of the colonization projects, the land ownership and laws that favored large farms which characterize Mato Grosso’s actual agriculture. The second e most important part describes the rural settlements using the Agrarian Reform Census 2002 data, comparing the results with other studies of national and state levels. The work contributes to regional literature offering descriptions of rural settlements and highlighting the small scale agriculture of the state.
