Abstract: O objetivo deste artigo consiste em compreender quais são as bases sociopolíticas do pensamento sobre o desenvolvimento territorial levando-se em consideração as diferentes concepções do desenvolvimento. Pretende-se analisar, também, os fundamentos e as contradições, históricos e atuais, subjacentes à consideração do território como elemento ativo de desenvolvimento. Para tanto, o caso francês foi tomado como referência empírica por ser considerado pioneiro nesse domínio.----------------------------------------------The objective of this paper is to understand the socio-political background of the thinking about territorial development, taking into consideration the different conceptions of development. The intention is also to analyze the fundamentals and the contradictions, historical and current, subjacent to the consideration of the territory as an active element of development. To undertake this, the French case has been taken as empirical reference since it is considered pioneer regarding this subject.
