Cotton Gin Operating Costs in the Midsouth--1969-70 and 1970-71 Seasons

Abstract: Gin operating costs in the Midsouth were analyzed for the 1970-71 and 1969-70 seasons on the basis of a sample of 48 plants representing over 8 percent of the total ginning capacity of the region. Although capacity utilization increased to 56 percent on the average in 1970-71 from 50 percent in 1969-70, average total cost per bale also increased--from $18.14 to $18.51. All overhead costs were down slightly in 1970-71; however, variable costs, except for energy, rose as a result of general price increases and inclement weather resulting in an abnormally long ginning season.
