Abstract:
Excerpts from the report: Increasing the level of shipments of vine-ripened tomatoes seems to depend on developing a marketing system that would insure a tomato of uniform quality, particularly with respect to color and maturity. The marketing of vine-ripened tomatoes has been improved with respect to color and maturity, but more improvement is necessary. Because of the high labor costs of color sorting tomatoes, and the importance of obtaining uniformity and consistency of color, research was conducted on photoelectric color sorting of vine-ripened tomatoes. The principal objectives of this research were (1) to test the use of photoelectric equipment for sorting vine-ripened tomatoes for color; (2) to conduct ripening studies of vine-ripened tomatoes sorted into color groups by photoelectric equipment; and (3) to study various factors associated with the commercial use of photoelectric equipment for this purpose.
