Enrollment in Voluntary Health Insurance in Rural Areas

Abstract: Excerpts from the report Summary: The rapid growth of enrollment in voluntary health insurance in recent years has focused attention on population groups that are relatively low in participation in insurance for hospital care, surgical expense, other health care services, and protection for income loss caused by illness or accidents. Participation in voluntary health insurance among farmers and other self-employed workers has fallen behind that of persons in other types of employment. This report gives the figures on relative enrollment in rural and urban areas and supplies data on the extent of enrollment among farm families, and it summarizes the experience that carriers have had in enrolling rural groups.
