The Older Farm Family and Medical Costs

James D. Cowhig and Emily O. Stewart

No 308905, Agricultural Information Bulletins from United States Department of Agriculture, Economic Research Service

Abstract: Excerpts from the report: The primary purpose of the report is to examine the medical expenditures of farm-operator families in which the head of the household was 65 years of age or older, and to determine the social and demographic characteristics associated with expenditures for various types of medical care. The data on which this report is based were obtained in a nation-wide survey conducted in 1956 in which information was obtained on the types of farm-operator family expenditures during the calendar year 1955. Expenditures for medical care are discussed from two perspectives: (1) the proportion of farm-operator families reporting selected types of medical expenditures in 1955, and (2) the average amount of money spent by families reporting such types of medical care.
