Agricultural Land Resources: Capabilities, Uses, Conservation Needs: A Digest of the National Inventory of Soil and Water Conservation Needs

U. S. Department of Agriculture Conservation Needs Inventory Committee

No 308940, Agricultural Information Bulletins from United States Department of Agriculture, Economic Research Service

Abstract: Excerpts from the report Foreword: This book contains a graphic digest of the results of the National Inventory of Soil and Water Conservation Needs. This Inventory has been a systematic on-the-ground study by the U.S. Department of Agriculture of the agricultural and other rural land of our country. All agencies of the Department concerned with land use, soil and water conservation, and management of land resources participated in it. The Soil Conservation Service had responsibility for leadership in conducting the Inventory. For 3 years, 1957-60, local people in every county jointly studied data from soil surveys of sample areas and related information from other sources to make the estimates summarized here. Altogether, more than 30,000 people in 3,000 counties participated. The results are unique in soil survey and land use statistics. This is the first time we have had consistent statistical sampling of the soil, slope, and erosion conditions and present land use in every county in the country. It is the first time that all creek-size watersheds have been delineated and their problems enumerated.
