Arnold L. Lundquist and John C. Bouma

No 308971, Agricultural Information Bulletins from United States Department of Agriculture, Economic Research Service

Abstract: Excerpts from the report: Objectives of the study are: (1) To evaluate and improve existing methods of receiving, storing, selecting, checking, and loading produce in affiliated warehouses; (2) to improve procedures for obtaining retail orders and for maintaining warehouse inventory and quality control; (3) to improve coordination between wholesaling departments when loading trucks at the warehouse with groceries, produce, frozen foods, and other items for delivery to retail food stores; (4) to improve space use; and (5) to improve fixed operations in the warehouse. This report summarizes and supplements published research on produce warehouse operations and applies it to affiliated warehouses. Operations were scrutinized in more than 40 warehouses; from analysis of observations, improved procedures were developed and applied in eight firms that were selected as typical.
