Large-Scale Farms in Perspective

Abstract: The number of large-scale farms (farms with annual sales of $500,000 or more) increased from 11,400 in 1974 to 27,800 in 1982. Although only 1.2 percent of all U.S. farms, these farms controlled over 10 percent of the land in farms in 1982 and accounted for nearly 33 percent of the total value of farm production. This report, using unpublished 1982 census data, examines recent trends in the number of large-scale farms, the proportion of total farmland under their control, and their contribution to total output. This report also discusses the origin of large-scale farms and their future role in U.S. agriculture.
