No 309728, Agricultural Information Bulletins from United States Department of Agriculture, Economic Research Service

Abstract: About 2.1 million farms operated 854 million acres of land in the contiguous United States in 1991. The average land operated was 407 acres per reporting farm. The value of gross farm sales, a measure of what the farm has produced during the year, was estimated at $145.5 billion, or $69,298 per farm. Gross cash farm income, a measure of cash actually received by the farm business during the year, totaled $130.7 billion, with 44 percent from crop sales, 42 percent from livestock sales, 9 percent from other farm-related income, and 5 percent from government payments. This report, the 16th Annual Family Farm Report to Congress, is the second in a series of reports designed to provide annual data on the major structural and financial characteristics of the farm sector as portrayed by the Farm Costs and Returns Survey.
