U.S. Farm and Farm-Related Employment in 1991

Abstract: Farm and farm-related industries provided over 21 million jobs in 1991, or 15.7 percent of total U.S. employment. These industries employed 40,000 fewer workers in 1991 than in 1990, reflecting job losses during the 1990-91 recession. Many of the lost jobs were in farm production and in apparel and textile manufacturing. But, some farm-related industries, particularly wholesale and retail trade of agricultural products, gained jobs. Although the overall number of jobs fell, farm and farm-related employment's share of total U.S. employment remained steady.
