Social and Economic Characteristics of Spanish-Origin Hired Farmworkers in 1973

Abstract: Spanish-origin and other ethnic groups of farm wageworkers are compared by age, sex, education, migratory status, employment, and earnings. Spanish-origin farmworkers in 1973 depended heavily on agriculture as a major source of employment and earnings. They appeared to have few viable alternatives to farmwork. Their farm earnings were generally higher than those of other ethnic groups working in agriculture; however, large household size, high dependency rates, and greater reliance upon agriculture for income may have reduced this economic advantage.
