Farm Population - Estimates for 1966

Abstract: Excerpt from the report: The estimated number of persons living on farms in rural areas of the United States numbered 11,595,000 in April 1966. This represents a decrease of 768,000 since 1965. The chances are one out of five that a decline of this magnitude or greater would have been obtained from the sample even if no actual change had occurred in the farm population between 1965 and 1966. The annual surveys on which the estimates are based have shown a continuous decline since 1955. According to the Annual Farm Population Survey of the Economic Research Service, between 1965 and 1966 a decline was experienced by all the major geographic divisions of the United States with the highest decreases indicated for the New England and East and West South Central Divisions.
