Economic Indicators of the Farm Sector: Costs of Production--Livestock and Dairy, 1988

Abstract: Costs of production for most livestock enterprises increased significantly in 1988. Milk production costs increased 12 percent per hundredweight mainly because of an increase in feed prices, a result of widespread drought. Livestock and dairy producers paid higher prices for inputs. Feed prices increased 24 percent and hay prices rose 34 percent. Feed prices had declined by 7 and 5 percent in 1986 and 1987.
