Abstract:
The average planted wheat acreage on representative farms in major wheat producing States ranged from 52 acres per farm in Illinois to 458 acres per farm in Montana. Estimates of operator and unpaid labor were similar for small, mid-sized, and large wheat farms, while estimates for part-time hired labor were proportional to farm size. This report presents average organizational and financial characteristics of representative farms producing wheat in 12 States by farm size. Basic data for the study came from the 1986 Farm Costs and Returns Survey conducted in February and March 1987 by the National Agricultural Statistics Service.
